We got married June 5, 2004, and immediately moved to Oklahoma. It was a huge adjustment moving from the mountains and forests of Idaho to the flat plains of the Sooner State. But no sooner than we got there (no pun intended), the Army decided to give us both a fresh start. I received orders to be a recruiter in Los Angeles County, California. So the three of us loaded up the truck and moved to Palmdale, California. Still in LA County, but far from the glitz and glamour of swimming pools and movie stars.

Recruiting is a tough gig. Long hours, high pressure, six days a week, etc., but we were grateful because it wasn’t a deployment. The year was 2005 when we first got there, and while I wasn’t hiding from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, I wasn’t ready to leave my wife, my step-son Jordan, and now my daughter to be, since Kim got pregnant right before we left Oklahoma. When Courtney was born, she had colic. She cried all day long, I was gone from about 7 AM to around 9 PM every day, so there was little I could do to help. Kim shouldered that burden all alone. She didn’t have her family nearby. We were friendly with, but not that close to the other recruiter’s wives, and Jordan, now 11-years-old, was trying to figure out where he fits in. For three years she was basically a single parent removed from all of the support she desperately needed until we moved back to Oklahoma.

Again, keeping things in perspective, Kim didn’t get a chaplain at the door saying I wasn’t coming home, but it’s not a stretch to say she was waiting for the car to pull up. Things settled down for a little bit once I got home, and for the next year or two everyone was happy. Things were even pretty good when I went to Afghanistan, and Kim’s mom came to stay with her through that deployment. Then the Army moved us to Indiana. Then we heard about Kim’s mom.  She had cancer, we lost her a month later. Kim was very close to her mother, and this rocked her to her core. It’s been a couple years since then and she still feels that stinging pain and emptiness that will never go away. But again, she handles everything with a beauty and grace that I admire so much. Kim and I have been through a lot, so much more than is even listed here. Having said that though, we weren’t prepared for the latest bit of news.

The treasured sound of all of my children, together, laughing and getting to know one another is a gift I never thought I would be given. No other gift could be as sweet for a mother. I have never felt such completeness as I did watch my little butterfly talking with my parents, my husband, my in-laws, my sister, and my nieces and nephews. About a year later, we reconnected over the phone and over the course of about a month, we developed a long-distance relationship that grew and blossomed into the most beautiful relationship I’ve ever heard of. I messaged back, as quickly as my fingers could type. ‘You will be?’ We had four days to prepare for her arrival. She was ready to meet my husband, my children, and my entire extended family, two days before Thanksgiving. It had been a year since I saw her for the first time, and our time together was too short. This time she would be coming to my home and meeting everyone.

Since her passing, I joined a church. I share weekly meals with my nana. I planned my youngest sister’s graduation party and held a baby shower for my oldest sister. I spoke at my grandfather’s funeral, at the same place, nearly a year to the day after my mom’s, his daughter’s, funeral. I still baby my brother and he still rolls his eyes at me with a “What,” since I’m probably asking for something. I call my dad at noon and 4 pm, my mom’s old lunch break and the time she left work. It has been the longest 1.5 years of my life. I have had one dream about her. In that dream, she hugged me, and I could smell her lotion. This was about a year ago. In the dream, I finally had the chance to tell her, ‘I loved hanging out with you. I love you.’

In about an hour, my mom had passed away and my family went into deep shock. This Oct. 23rd marks 1.5 years without talking to my mom, touching her, laughing with her, dancing to the Bee Gees together, or going to see a movie- our favorite thing to do. At 26, I am the second oldest of 4. I had to look all three of my siblings in the eyes at different times and tell them our mom was gone while my dad and nana were with her to end care. My brother was the one to go home and clean up the carpet where she passed away because, as it happens, bodily functions take over. He was 19 at the time.

“It was April 23rd, 2017 and I was lying in bed with my husband of close to 5 months, laughing about something one of our cats did. I rolled over to get ready for the day when Nick, my husband, said, ‘Where are you going?’ At just after 10 am on a Sunday, I was planning to go see my mom, who lived about 7 minutes away with my dad and brother. She had just gone through an abdominal surgery and was resting. I told him, ‘I’m going to see mom. She wants to hang out with me like every day.’

I had about 7 years of life guarding under my belt, so my immediate response was, ‘Hang up and call 911.’ Nick is standing up at this point, very concerned. I didn’t know it, but at that point, my mom had already died. She didn’t have a seizure but died from a pulmonary embolism. Two ambulances are there trying to treat her, I am rushing to get dressed, and crying because, sometimes you just know that this moment is the life changing one. Full of dread.
